Pelé’s promiseA promessa de Pelé
A story that shows how great he was.
Uma história que demonstra a sua grandeza.
It was 1977. The NASL (North American Soccer League), which later gave rise to today’s MLS (Major League Soccer), was going through a boom, and the Cosmos were the biggest thing in it. Back then the league had several world class players, Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, Chinaglia and Pelé among them, and plenty of others spread across its different teams.
I was playing for Associação Académica de Coimbra. To hold out for one more year against the big Portuguese clubs that wanted me, I worked out a deal with the club’s directors: I could go and play in the USA for three months with the Rochester Lancers. That would make up the difference from what I was being offered, and I could stay in Coimbra a while longer.
Cosmos games were always special, especially for people who loved football. When they ended, what the fans wanted most was to run onto the pitch, hug their idols and ask for their shirts to keep.
Before Rochester Lancers v Cosmos there was the usual round of handshakes between the players and with the referees. I was only starting out, and I went up to Pelé and told him, among other things, that I admired him and would like to swap shirts with him after the game. He could guess what was going to happen, so he told me it would be difficult, but he promised that if it was possible, he would.
…the humility and respect we show other people can stay in their memory forever…
The game started and I forgot all about it. Then the final whistle went and, out of nowhere, a huge crowd poured onto the pitch from all sides, peacefully (my teammates among them), and started to close in, mostly on two of the Cosmos stars, Beckenbauer and Pelé. To my amazement, I looked over and saw Pelé waving his arms, trying to get free of everyone who was surrounding him and grabbing at him. I was even more amazed when I realised he was coming towards me, shouting at people that he had promised me his shirt and they had to let him through. Of course I was thrilled. I was getting to swap shirts with the man who was, back then, the biggest name in world football. I was just as touched by the consideration he showed a young Portuguese player at the start of his career, with his head full of dreams, and I felt lucky to see his character for myself.
That gesture said everything. It showed that, however important or famous we are, there are always moments in our lives, often ones we think little of, when the humility and respect we show other people can stay in their memory forever... It was like that for me.
Here is the photo that proves what I have told you, and the shirt itself is one of the few I keep religiously in my display cabinet.
O jogo começou e nunca mais me lembrei do pedido feito.
